For the past few months I’ve been listening to non-stop progressive house and hating on dubstep, calling it “insolent noise”. I recently moved to San Francisco via LA and met a new friend who is a dubstep fanatic…he’s opened my eyes to the dubstep movement. He explained that, in the same way that I look for layers of sounds in progressive house to hold my attention and build anticipation, he looks for anticipation-building climbs that end with a climactic, unexpected periods of utter chaos. I still prefer more focussed and musical wobbles but have definitely grown to appreciate the surprise element of dubstep over the steady “four-on-the-floor” kick-drum beat that defines much of house music. As with any genre, it takes time to find which artists and elements hook you. Butch Clancy’s remix of “The Funeral”, by Band of Horses, is an example of the type of dubstep I’ve been into recently.
